 Making Sense of Self: Person-Centred Counselling & People with Dementia

Saturday 10^th November 2007           10 am – 4 pm 

This interactive workshop will build on the already significant counselling skills of the group and develop their knowledge of people with dementia. It will focus specifically on the issues concerning men and women with dementia in counselling, the effects on their partners and families and our relationships with professional colleagues. 

At the end of the day, participants will:

• Recognise what their particular service will offer
• Have a clear idea of the differences and similarities between counselling clients with and without dementia
• Understand some of the specific needs of clients with cognitive impairment
• Discuss ways of maintaining the counsellor’s role and confidentiality with families and professional colleagues
• Identify ways of encouraging and empowering clients to ‘own’ their counselling experience
• Explore beginnings and endings, dependency issues, goal identification, including recognising when counselling may not be appropriate or when referral may be necessary, how to manage groups

Training will comprise pairs work, interactive discussion, handout materials, evaluations and certificates. 

Danuta Lipinska has a BA in Psychology and is a qualified nurse.  She holds a Mater’s degree in Counselling and is a MBACP (Accred) counsellor in private practice.  A free lance trainer with over twenty years experience in both the UK and USA she has worked in most health and social care environments and across the spectrum of mental health and older adults.  Danuta has designed and managed counselling services and groups for people with dementia, for family carers and professionals.  An international conference presenter, facilitator and writer, her first book on this topic will be published soon.
