LIFE, LOVE and DEATH

An evening of creative writing and reflection

Thursday 4th October 2018

 7.30 pm—9.45 pm

The Weston Room, The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral

PART 1: THE POETRY OF GRIEF

Sonnets and Reflections by BRIAN THORNE, Co-founder of the Norwich Centre

PART 2: THE GIRL WHO LEARNT TO KNEEL

A play inspired by the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum by CHARLOTTE CARTER sometime post-qualification counsellor at the Norwich Centre

With JOANNA SWAN as Etty, PIP DUNN as Julius Spier and GILLIAN DEAN as Tide

PART 1: On January 18th 2018, Christine, beloved wife of Brian Thorne for over 50 years, died after a long illness.  In the month following her death, Brian wrote seven sonnets in her memory and he will be reading these sonnets and reflecting on their significance for a grieving process.

PART 2: THE DIARIES OF Etty Hillesum—written during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam between 1941–43—now rival those of Anne Frank as a penetrating and deeply moving commentary on one of the most harrowing periods in European history.  Central to the diaries is the remarkable relationship between Etty and her therapist, Julius Spier, which proved to be the source of the deepest spiritual strength and significance.

Charlotte Carter portrays the development of this relationship in a powerful dramatization which tonight has its first live performance.
